Preparing and cooking Asparagus
Step One
Once you have separated the part of the spear worth cooking then wash it in cool water to remove any soil and dirt from the tips.
Step Two
Take a wide skillet and start boiling the asparagus in approximately 1 inch of salted water for 3 to 5 minutes. You can check if they are tender with help of a fork. Once done, immediately rinse the asparagus under cool water so that you stop the cooking and also preserve the bright green color.
Step Three
Once the asparagus are a little tender you can then steam the spears or chopped pieces for nearly 3 minutes and then rinse them under cool water
Step Four
Place a frying pan on gas and place a little butter in it. Allow the butter to melt so that it covers the vegetable. You can drizzle a little lemon and let it cool to be consumed. In case you are fond of roasted or grilled asparagus then follow the steps below.
Step Five (Roasting)
Instead of taking a frying pan and placing butter you can roast asparagus in an oven at 500 degrees F for 4 to 5 minutes. Roasting is ideal for thicker spears instead of thinner ones.
Step Six (Recipe with ginger and cashews)
To add a little more taste you can heat sesame oil along with vegetable oil in a frying pan. Take a little ginger and stir it with help of a wooden spatula for a minute. Add the asparagus and continue cooking for 3 to 4 minutes. Put in the soy sauce along with cashews and cook for another 2 minutes.
Step Seven (Grilling)
Asparagus also tastes just as good when grilled. Whether on an indoor grill or an outdoor barbecue it is a great way to cook asparagus as the slight charred flavor offers a wonderful addition.
After cleaning the asparagus lay it on the grill. Take a small brush and brush the spears with oil. You can use olive oil if it suits your taste. Sesame oil is seen to add a much wonderful flavor when compared to olive oil. You must grill the spears for approximately 5 minutes or until they become tender. You can test for the tenderness using a fork. Serve the asparagus with a sprinkle of salt on top of it.
