What is parenting?

Every second, there is a birth in this big bang universe, and someone somewhere is experiencing a unique feeling of joy, happiness aside some qualms of taking a new role of parent.

Parenthood is a form of art that finds color in its own creations. “If two faces are not alike, how can two minds be alike” as the adage clearly states, the art of parenting differs amongst various individuals and their respective behavioral patterns as well. No two parents are alike in bringing up their kids. Each one is convinced of their own. And since parenting does not follow any set rules, there doesn’t seem to exist any foolproof manual to answer all questions that often surface on the shores of the respective parenting souls of a new parent as well a parent who plays even with their grandchild.

Parenting certainly is not a one-time exercise but is a continuous and constant effort of learning, sharing, understanding and empathizing with the given circumstances. One would find varied workshops, programs, and several articles on parenting, but it is always learning by experiencing that really helps in bringing up the joy of being a parent and reinventing your identity as a parent.

Whatever be the form of parenting, some basic and underlying observations that remain unique and universal and that needs conscious efforts to practice on the part of a parent are to typically understand the needs of a child with open mind, not to indulge in any preconceived set of thoughts and never to compare child with another.

It is imperative to give child its space to grow so that it can nurture its characteristics for you as a parent to enjoy the wonders.

Do not cling on to the child; and never allow him to cling to you all the time. Let him fly with his wings of imagination but just guide him and see the way they try to carve a niche for him. Tell him the importance of independence, while cautioning not to be too confident about him.

Never teach a child. As a saying in The Bible goes, do unto others as you want others do to you, you as a parent has to practice all that you wish your child should pick from you. If you want your child to be humane you need to be one. If you want your child to be jumping around you can’t ask it by couching you. You need to be there to jump with him.

Finally, each child is unique, and let it explore the world in its own way be there to guide and strive to make them more and more curious. Love and admire their innocence and last, a parent has to patient first and you will find that parenting is a whole new world of reinventing your own self.
